KFC Update

If you were able to print your FREE meal coupons from KFC but haven't used them yet there are a few things you need to know.

You can read here about why some KFC's are choosing to not honor these coupons but will still give you a rain check.

It is my understanding, however, that the KFC's in Topeka will honor these coupons, but they have a per day quota. So my suggestions for all of you is that if you want to redeem these coupons I would go for lunch because by 4:00p.m. yesterday all 3 Topeka stores had hit their quota.

If you know of other information please be sure to share it with us. Thanks!

Electricity bill

Below is my post you can also see on TopekaKidsRock.com today! Be sure to visit to see all the area events happening in and around Topeka this weekend!

Saving on your Electricity Bill

I am LOVING this weather, are you? It is not too cold and it is not too hot, it is perfect. Of course, from the money saving perspective, I really love this weather because neither my furnace nor my air conditioner are running which equals big savings for our household this month!

Soon enough I won't be saving so much money because at some point the air conditioner will have to come on. Every year in our house we make it a little game to see how low we can keep our electric bill. Last year we hit a record low in our 4 years of marriage and I am not sure we can top it this year! Here are a few things that help us from turning on our air conditioner earlier than necessary and allow us to run it as little as possible during the hot summer months.

Fans Fans Fans!
One of the greatest ways we have found to keep our electric bill low is to use fans. We use our whole house fan, ceiling fans, tower fans and even a window fan! If you have an attic fan this is such a great resource as well! We primarily use the window fan while the evenings are cool and the air conditioner is still not necessary. We have one in our dining room window and turn it on at night so it can pull the cold air in. We have seen this fan cool our house as much as 5 degrees over night! Mind you our house is not that big.

Use the Crock Pot and Grill
We all know that using our oven inevitably makes the kitchen hot and depending on the type of house you have this heat will disperse to other parts of your house. Using the crock pot or grill in the hotter months are great alternatives to the oven.

Use more natural light
Since the sun is up so long in the summer months we use as few lamps and overhead lights as possible. Believe it or not overhead lights and even lamps can generate heat and use additional electricity. So open up the windows and let the natural light in!

Use power strips
Okay, this won't keep your house cool, but it will help you save on electricity. Consider plugging things such as your computer, tv/stereo and even kitchen appliances into power strips. Even when your electronics are turned off they will still use electricity as long as they are still plugged in. So plug as many things as you can into power strips and simply turn them off at night. We have noticed a $10 decrease in our monthly electric bill just by doing this. It may not sound like a lot but over a year that is $120.00! That amount of money can go a long way!

If you have other ideas be sure to share them in the comments section!

Chicken Nuggets: Recipe and Price Breakdown

I got this recipe from a good friend and my family loves it! It is so easy!

Chicken
Nuggets: Serves 4-6

3 chicken breasts (about 1.5 pounds), cut into 1/2 in. strips (3 lb. bag at Aldi has been 5.99 lately) 1.5 lbs.=$3.00
2/3 c. Bisquick mix (or flour)= guesstimate of about .30?
1/2 c. grated Parmesan cheese (use fresh or in can)= guesstimate of .50?
1/2 tsp. garlic salt=pennies
1/2 tsp. paprika=pennies
1 egg (1 dozen has been around $1 lately at Aldi)=.08 cents
3 Tbsp. butter, melted (margarine sticks are .59/4 ct. box at Aldi) 3 tbsp.=about .07 cents

Directions:
Heat oven to 450 degrees F. Line cookie sheet with foil; spray with cooking spray.
In a 1-gal. plastic bag, mix Bisquick (or flour), cheese, salt, and paprika.
Dip the chicken strips into the egg; place in bag and shake to coat (do half at a time). Place on cookie sheet. Drizzle butter over chicken.
Bake 12-14 min, turning halfway.

I was able to serve our family of 3 and have leftovers. I simply put the nuggets in the fridge, and then reheated them in the oven on 300 degrees for about 10 minutes for lunch the next day.

So all together these will cost you around $4.00 to make give or take a few pennies. That is .67-$1/serving!

Johnny Carinos

You may have read here yesterday about how various Carinos restaurants around the country are giving mom a FREE meal for Mother's Day. Well unfortunately our local Topeka store IS NOT participating!

The good news in this post is that I discovered that when you visit the Carinos site here and sign up for their email club you will be sent a coupon for 1/2 off 1 entree! I signed up yesterday and recieved my coupon this morning.

K-Mart Tripple Couopns?

**UPDATED**

Thanks to Blaire for this info!

Apparently our Topeka K-Mart is actually DOUBLING coupons this week not trippling. After talking with the staff at K-mart it was discovered that our Topeka K-mart is doubling coupons up to a max amount of $4! That will make for some great deals! Below is Blaire's comment with the info in it

"I was just in the Kmart on Wanamaker about an hour ago. They put a sign on the door saying that the .75 coupon was an error. They will double $2.00 coupons to $4.00 off. I asked if you buy a $3 item and have a $2 coupon, what would happen. They will take off $3, and give you the item for free, but will not give overage. I did not see anything about tripling. The salesperson said that each person can only use 25 coupons per day. Not transaction. Per day. HTH.."

Still be sure to see this HUGE compilation of double coupon match ups here! Remember these prices that are posted here may not represent the prices of our Topeka store, but probably come close!
